New Mexico State Quarter Design Artist Rendering
The title of the New Mexico State Quarter design is "Land of Enchantment." The coin depicts an outline of the map of the State of New Mexico, with the Zia sun symbol on top. The Zia were an ancient Native American civilization that built pueblo cities in the cliffs and caves of the hilly high desert New Mexico terrain. The artwork for New Mexico Quarter was designed and engraved by U.S. Mint Sculptor/Engraver Don Everhart.
Although the New Mexico Quarter design's Zia symbol is steeped in tradition, the coin seems rather plain looking compared to other Statehood Quarters. Some people would disagree, though, saying that most of our coins have become way too busy for the small metal canvases on which they appear, and wish that our coinage would return to simple portraits and eagles. What do you think?
