The First Presidential Dollar Doubled Die Coin to be Authenticated

From Susan Headley, About.com

Washington Presidential Dollar Doubled Die WDDR-001

This Washington Presidential Dollar Doubled Die is listed as WDDR-001 in John Wexler's files; discovered by Shawn Bell.

Coin discovery and photo by Shawn and Shelly Bell of bigbuckbell eBay auctions.
Some people might say that Shawn Bell is lucky, because he finds a lot of die variety and error coins, and he's earned the discovery coin credit for some high profile errors such as the Washington Presidential Dollar with a double set of edge inscriptions, and the coin shown here. This is the first-ever confirmed Presidential Dollar doubled die specimen! The secret to Shawn's success isn't luck, though. He searches tens of thousands of coins every month! In other words, his success is the result of effort, not just luck!

The coin shown here was authenticated by variety coin expert John Wexler, and is listed in his files as WDDR-001. The area of doubling is small, just a little portion of Liberty's robe has been repeated to the northwest about a millimeter or so, but the fact that there is any hub doubling at all on the Presidential Dollars is remarkable. Supposedly, doubled dies and hubs were impossible using the single-squeeze hubbing method, which the Mint is believed to have implemented around the year 2001. Shawn has an explanation, though. He believes that the fact that all of the doubling being found now is occurring in the center of the coin is because when the die is mated to the hub for impressing, if it isn't perfectly aligned a small imprint will be made before the die finally seats itself properly.

In the photo above, a small portion of Liberty's robe appears just outside her inner elbow.
