Proof Presidential Dollar Off Center Error Coin

This Proof Adams Presidential Dollar error coin is off center by a goodly amount, which is extremely rare for a Proof coin!

This remarkable Proof Adams Presidential Dollar error coin was found by Mendy Copley in Titusville, Florida. Although Mendy is a coin collector, she was quite dazzled by what she found in her Presidential Dollar Proof Set! One of the coins, (the John Adams Dollar,) appeared to be way off center, as shown in the photo above, but that wasn't all. The reverse side of the coin exhibits a very high wire rim, called a finned rim according to error coins expert (and CONECA president) Mike Diamond. (Photos of the wire rim are shown soon in this presentation.)

Not knowing exactly what she had, or how much it was worth, Mendy contacted Coin World magazine. In their usual friendly and helpful manner, the folks there examined her photos and told that she had a very rare and unusual error. They also wisely suggested that she send the remarkable coin off to NGC for certification and encapsulation, which Mendy did. She tells me that NCG gave the coin a horizontal planchet designation, and she eventually sold the coin for $1,250.

In August of 2008, Mint Error News had a nearly identical Proof Presidential Dollar error featured in issue number 24, which experts concluded was an exceedingly rare ellipitcal planchet error. An ellipitical planchet error happens when the coin blank (planchet) gets cut into an elliptical shape rather than the normal round one. It is my belief that the coin Mendy found exhibits the same kind of error.
