Coin Values for Jefferson Nickels are Listed Below

Thie Coin Values Guide has Jefferson Nickel values for coins in similar condition to this one.

Jefferson Nickel coin values aren't very much unless they are in practically uncirculated condition (AU-50, About Uncirculated).  However, in the interest of satisfying the person who has been collecting  them from circulation, or run across a stash somewhere, I offer the following table of Jefferson Nickel Values for nickels in EF-40 condition (depicted above.)  To qualify for EF-40, the coin should still have clear lines in the hair, the eyebrow should be clearly defined, and the cheekbone should have only slight wear.  On the reverse, you should be able to make out the base of the triangle below the dome.  Keep in mind that these values are mainly guidelines to help you determine if you have rare coins. To get today's current market prices, you should contact a coin dealer.

Have you thought about putting your Jefferson Nickels in a coin collecting folder?  Compare Prices

If your nickels  are still uncirculated, the coin values could be five times as high or more.  If they are fairly worn, they are worth much less than the coin prices given.  If the steps of Monticello are clearly defined on specimens prior to 1992, the coin is worth a premium.  The location of the mintmark, if the coin has one, can be found according to the date of the nickel:

  • 1938 to 1942 - Mintmark is to the right of the building on the reverse
  • 1942 to 1945 (Silver alloy) - Mintmark is above the dome on the reverse
  • 1946 to 1967 - Mintmark is to the right of the building on the reverse
  • 1968 to 2003 - Mintmark is to the right of Jefferson's ponytail below the date

Notes:
Jefferson Nickels dated 1971 or later, with the S mintmark, are always Proof coins and are not listed in this coin values table of circulated coins.

Sources include the "Blue Book Handbook of U.S. Coins," PCGS Online Coin Prices Guide, Heritage Galleries Web Site, and my own personal knowledge of Jefferson Nickel prices.  Photo of the typical EF-40 Jefferson Nickel by Susan Head;ey.

If you have a lot of coins to look up values for, and want to know the realistic prices that dealers will pay you, I recommend the Blue Book of U.S. Coin Values, which is the wholesale price guide that dealers use.  It costs about $10 and is well-worth the small investment.  Compare prices for the 2008 Blue Book.
