Bi-Metallic Coin

By Susan Headley, About.com

Definition:

A Bi-Metallic coin is a coin which is made of two different-colored metals, and comprised of two separate parts that are bonded together during striking. A typical bi-metallic coin has an outer ring of nickel, with an inner core of copper alloy, although bi-metallic coins can have practically any combination of outer and inner ring metals.

A similar coin type is the tri-metallic, which is made from three different rings of various colored metals. An important point to remember about bi- and tri-metallic coins is that the distinguishing feature is the different colored rings of metal, not the fact that a coin has comprised of an alloy containing two metals.
Alternate Spellings: bimetallic
Examples: One of the most common bi-metallic coins is the 2 Euro coin which circulates in Europe.
