Token Coinage - What is a Token Coinage?

Definition: A token coinage is a system of money based on coins made out of non-precious metals, such as copper, nickel, zinc, aluminum, etc., and which circulates based on face value, rather than bullion value.

Examples: When the United States went off the silver standard, its coinage became an entirely token coinage based system of money.
