What is a Coin Flan?

Definition: The flan is the cast metal disc onto which the ancient coin was struck. The term flan refers specifically to ancient coins. For the modern coin equivalent, see planchet.
Examples: The disc of metal than an ancient coin is struck on is called the flan.
