U.S. Small Cents (1856 - Date)

The United States Mint has been producing small cents since 1856. This began with the Flying Eagle cent that only lasted a few years. In 1859 the Indian Head penny was introduced and lasted until 1909 when it was replaced by the Lincoln Wheat Back cent to commemorate the 100th birth of Abraham Lincoln. In 1959 the reverse of the Lincoln cent was replaced with a design that featured the Lincoln Memorial in Washington D.C. This lasted until 2009 when four different reverse designs that commemorated the 200th birth of our nations most prominent president. In 2010 the shield reversed was introduced and still graces the back of this most popular coin.
