Tomorrow (July 5, 2012) by 5:00pm ET is your last chance to purchase the special Silver Eagle set to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the U.S. Mint at San Francisco. The 2012 American Eagle San Francisco Two-Coin Silver Proof Set consists of one American Eagle Silver Proof Coin and one American Eagle Silver Reverse Proof Coin minted at the United States Mint at San Francisco with the "S" mintmark. According to the Mint's website on Wednesday afternoon, 245,131 sets have been sold so far. This would be the third lowest mintage of any U.S. Proof Silver Eagle coin. Did you buy one? Let me know by voting in the poll below.

Note: The U.S. Mint is no longer accepting orders for this set. Final sales are posted as 251,302 sets sold.

I may be wrong, i may be right. Time will tell. I think it has got to be a little bit to expensive for the mint to remelt what’s left over. Unless there is a shortage of silver. If these are specially minted coins which i suspect they are, then it might be possible to find them for sale later at the mint. Like i searched for and found the 2001 kennedy half dollars that were put away into the mints vault.

James,
Correct me if I’m wrong but – the number posted on the Mint website is NOT final sales as indicated above. This was the number around 3PM on 5 July. Accurate final sales figures wouldn’t be available until after 5PM which would not yet appear on the Mints webpage sales counter.

Per the Mint web page…..

Total units ordered will be updated on Friday, July 6, 2012 by 3 p.m. (ET) to reflect the last day of the ordering window.

I expect sales to be over 260,000 but hope I’m wrong!

@ “coiny” – I believe you’re mistaken. There won’t BE any extra’s to melt. I think the whole reason they’re not shipping until July 27th is that they had no intention (as they indicated before ordering began) of producing more of these sets than are sold.
I suspect the other reason for not shipping until after the sales are cut off is two-fold;
#1 – The U.S. Mint grossly overcharged us for these sets on purpose. They should have been priced @ no more than $129.95 to be on a par with the 20th & 25th Anniversary sets. I believe that they did this to limit sales a bit knowing that a lot of folks who whined about not getting a 25th Anniversary set weren’t really avid collectors anyway and would balk at the $149.95 price tag.
#2 – To reward those who DID order, they’ve held the sets until after sales are complete so that when the inevitable ‘annomolies’ (errors) are discovered in these sets those of us who ordered them will be vindicated along with the Mint officials who offered to make as many of them as we’d buy!
Think about this; The ONLY way to have a complete set of all 3 reverse proof Silver Eagles is to buy one of these sets. At 251,000 sets sold, everyone who didn’t step up and buy at least one set is going to be kicking themselves and buying one later at a premium! The price won’t go DOWN on these sets, it’ll go UP. Wait and see….
Also, if I was Mint Director and had weathered the 25th Anniversary Set storm, I’d throw some kind of nice ‘extra’ into each of these new sets as a reward to us for ponying up $150 bucks for one. Again….wait and see….

@Michael

I think you are giving the Mint too much credit.
While they should be concerned about how customers view them, in the end their main goal is to “manufacture and distribute circulating coins, precious metals and collectible coins, and national medals to meet the needs of the United States” at a profit.
I honestly doubt they care enough about the customers to…as you say, “reward” them. While it is a nice thought, I doubt the director of the mint really cares to that extent. I’m sure the mint has a pretty good idea of how many coins they need to produce to cover all orders, errors, and damaged coins including potential returns. I’m sure they simply melt the leftovers when all is said and done which in all likelihood – didn’t really add much in additional cost to produce.
I do hope your correct and these coins only increase in vaue!

Why in the world are these coins backordered to September? This is a ridiculous time-frame to deliver coins bearing a 2012 date.

Ok, folks. Off the top of my head for those of you that want to see what the mint still has available for sale, here is what i remember. On the mint’s home page, go to the bottom of the page. Find the sitemap. Go to the sitemap FROM the home page. Look up what’s available for sale at the mint. As i remember it will take you to pages of items no longer available, or, still available from the mint. It’s been years this was wy before the mint changed thier web site. It dosen’t work well for me any more so i don’t go to thier site any more. Nor can i read thier news letters, i just delete them. Do not go to thier sitemap from any other page except from the home page or you will not find it. Hope you all find what you are looking for. Not a secrete! It’s been there all this time. And probably still is. In fact dureing that statehood quarters run, i got a proof quarter (maybe 3 or 4) with the die that made the quarters from that availability page/s. Bet nobody knew they existed? You just have to search. Some search well, others don’t. I don’t search well – i get lucky. That’s about the only place i do “get lucky now days”

I believe it is so important at this time in history to buy silver bullion. The world’s economies are in trouble, we are a debtor nation, and there is a limited supply of silver which we use in so many applications. I purchase my bullion at http://www.silverinstantly.com . They have some great prices especially for the small investor.
