Boy Scout Commemorative Dollar Goes On Sale

From Susan Headley, About.com Guide   March 23, 2010

Boy Scouts of America Coin
The long-awaited Boy Scouts of America (BSA) Commemorative Dollar went on sale today at the U.S. Mint Web site.  Priced at $39.95 for the Proof version, and $33.95 for the Uncirculated (burnished finish) version, these large diameter (38.1 mm) coins are struck in 90% silver.

The obverse ("heads" side) depicts a representative member of the three main branches of the BSA - a Cub Scout, a Venturer (the girls' branch), and a Boy Scout, all making their branch-specific salutes.  The reverse depicts the BSA universal emblem and includes the famous Boy Scout motto Be Prepared among the more usual national slogans.

Mintage is limited to 350,00 specimens across both the Proof and Uncirculated options combined, and surcharges from the sale of these coins will benefit the National Boy Scouts of America Foundation.

Venturers can be either male or female…

I think the design for the Boy Scout commemorative was not decided on very well. I saw the other designs and they were much better than the one that was chosen. This is the boy scouts and whether or not Venturers can be male or female, it should still be all boys, just like the Girl Scout commemorative should be all girls. The design that I think should have been picked is the one that shows the scout from 1910 reaching down and helping the scout from 2010 up. The Mint should have chosen the design with the most symbolism and not the coin with the most political correctness.

I agree with Anonymous on this one, I will save my money and let this one slide. Poor design.

I also agree with anonymous on this one. Shame on me…I didn’t really pay attention to the design when I ordered until the coin arrived today. Disappointed to say the least.

I, too, must agree with “Anonymous”. I would have like the image of the “old” scout helping the “new” scout much better than the “politically correct” image that was chosen. That being said… and I hate political correctness… it IS the “Boy Scouts” coin, like it or not, and having been in Boy Scouts when I was younger, I would have bought it regardless of the coin’s design.

It is a design that has no artistic merit. Why spend money for something that does not tickle one’s fancy?

the reverse is asthetically pleasing to me at least

political correctness is something we won’t be able to get away from
