New Lincoln Cent Design Is Released
The third of the four 2009 Lincoln Cent designs has been released. The design, which features Abraham Lincoln giving a speech in front of the Illinois State Capitol Building, is called Lincoln's "Professional Life." It commemorates the period of time when Lincoln worked as a lawyer and state legislator in Illinois, prior to being nominated for the presidency of the United States.
The new pennies can be purchased on the U.S. Mint site in a 2-roll set for $8.95 per set, with a 5-set limit per household. Each roll contains 50 coins, struck in the normal circulating copper-coated zinc composition. One roll is from the Denver Mint and the other from the Philadelphia Mint. The U.S. Mint adds a $4.95 shipping and handling charge to all orders.

Wow! . . . I live only 50-60 miles from the mint in Philadelphia, but still have only seen three specimens of the FIRST new Lincoln cent.
I’m always on the lookout for the new coins.
These coins are not setting any records making their way around in circulation!
Hi Susan,
Good point here by Jersey Joe. The 2009 coins, mainly the pennies, nickels and dimes are very difficult to find in circulation. I have seen only 2 log cabin and 2 formative years cents. Last week I was lucky enough to receive a 2009 P nickel as change. No dimes so far. I have tried many times and in different banks and even states to purchase uncirculated rolls. No luck. I heard that bank workers are keeping these new coins for resale in online auctions, where you pay several times the face value. Any thoughts on this situation?
Four new pennies hit pants pockets, car ashtrays and sidewalks telling the tale of President Abraham Lincoln’s life on the “tails” of the coins.
Here in southeast Iowa we haven’t seen any of the new pennies..none of them…alot people I have spoken with didn’t even know that they have been redesigned.Banks say they won’t be getting them, so I don’t even ask.
So far only 1 Log Cabin Penny for me … when asking local banks for rolls of new pennies, they clearly state that they cant get them or you can order a brick of $25 worth of pennies and maybe you will end up with a brand new brick all 2009, or a mixed brick of circulated coins of which some 2009’s may be mixed in, but of circulated condition. They say they have no control over what pennies will arrive from an order of pennies from a distribution center. Also NO other 2009 coins found other than quarters up here in New Hampshire.
I’m embarrassed to say it but I paid $1.50 for 3 of the new Lincoln pennies at the flea market this weekend. But I wanted to add the pictures to my own website.
Paying .50 for .01 is just silly though.
With the 2009 pennies being so slowly released into circulation, I am really curious to see if the mint will be making less coins in 2010.
No new 2009 coins at all here in Michigan that I have seen so far. The bank will not order the new pennies they state we have too many of the regular ones and there is no need and will not even consider it. Makes you wonder if the mint purposly will not put any into circulation or are the bank workers ordering them and keeping them or what. The banks need to let us order them if we are paying for them right!
# 5 This is nothing new. I just read an article of things like this happening right around the civil war. There were many tokens made that were being accepted as legal tender coins. They were legal tender, as they were coins privately minted. As i remember from the article there was a shortage of coinage to go around. There were plenty of uses and the need for coins. So seller would set up make shift booths to sell coins at 10 to 30% profit to passengers who needed them to pay for transpertation.
Seems the more things change, the more they stay the same.
I’ve seen zero 09 pennies thru 09. Almost 9 months into this year. Only have seen about a few 08’s so far.

@7: I’ve found about 75 2008 pennies, and that’s just from a few rolls.
Here in Massachusetts I’ve gotten two of the second design in rolls/change and one of the first at a friends house. I was luckily able to purchase a hundred “Formative Years” for face value at my bank after harassing them for a few weeks.
Well i live in Michigan and a coin dealer and i currently have all 3 pennies issued to date in singles and rolls both mint anyone interested email me at 989 553 1838 thanks Brian
We had a yard sale a couple of weeks ago to raise money for the Jimmy Fund. While counting the proceeds I came across 6 2009-P dimes, 1 formative years cent, and 10 Sacagawea 2009-P dollar coins. Other than that 2009 coinage has been absent here in the northeast.
Somebody must be hoarding all the new pennies. Darn near two trillion produced, and i haven’t seen one 09 penny yet. Going into the 10′th month of this year. Being at the hub of commerce in this country, you would expect to see, just one. Being in the tri state area. I suspect, hoarding. Unless the feds aren’t releasing that many into circulation. That’s alot of pennies to warehouse. Some may never see circulation if things don’t pick in this economy.
