Coin Dealer Reviews - Chattanooga Coin

By July 13, 2008

Follow me on:

I am beginning a new feature called "Coin Dealer Reviews," in which I will be providing periodic reviews of major coin dealers. These are the dealers who advertise on television and in the major coin-related publications such as CoinAge, Numismatic News, Coin World, etc. I will make anonymous test buys from these companies, and then evaluate how well they fill the order. Some of the questions I will look at include:
  • Are the coins accurately graded?
  • Is the customer service friendly and efficient?
  • How is the shipping (cost, packaging, and time frames?)
  • Would I do business with them again? Why (not?)
My first review is for a TV coin advertiser who also advertises in major coin-related print media called "Chattanooga Coin." They're based not in Chattanooga, but Rossville, Georgia, and although their up-front customer service is first class, with friendly "Southern belles" taking your order, Chattanooga's back-end customer service is the among the worst I've encountered among coin dealers in years. I've had to pay for my own shipping to return their mistakes (twice,) and they often send a lesser-quality or lower-grade replacement when they run out of something (rather than compensating "upward" like most companies who value your business do in such cases.)

Read my full review of Chattanooga Coin, and then share your own experiences with them in the Comments section below.

I’m a retail customer. I’ve purchased twice from Chattanooga Coins with good luck. They had specials which proved to be worthwhile. I actually received more than I expected from them. Their grading company, however, is horrible. The graded coins I received from them were extras so It didn’t bother me that they were overgaded. I may go back for more.

I phoned today just asking questions about the business as I understand no one should do business without checking things out (like when we all used to window shop before making purchases). The method is different but the process has to be the same; value equals value for both consumer and operator. I was given vague information which prompted me to look them up. Thanks for an honest review! People be careful what you do with your money because after all it is your money…

I ordered a PCGS PR70 set on 22jun and received a call in the evening on 8jul. Her name was margaret. SHe told me my set was not grading out like they thought. She continued to bring out negative info about this set. I told her why did she take my order and personal info if you didn’t have the items. I went by the advertisement about 2-3 weeks ago and ordered the set from the 800 #. I asked why do you have false advertising. She said my order was being cancelled since I was not happy. I said I didn’t want to cancel and would wait for the grading results for a chance at my set. Margaret insisted my order was cancelled because she didn’t want to not make me happy. I believe the reason it was cancelled was due to not many were grading 70′s and Chattanooga Coin wanted to resale the items for more. This practice is deplorable and I want my experience to add to the already negative reviews that have been posted.

I have been dealing with Chatanooga Coin for about 2 years now and have encountered no problems what-so-ever. I only purchase graded coins from the big 4 grading services so I’m confident in the grade of the coin I am recieving. I have had no delays in shipping from this company and when placing my order over the phone, they have been very friendly and helpful. I’m sure people have had issues but I have seen none of this from my experience with chatanooga coin.
