Did Annie Oakley Shoot This Coin?
Friday June 27, 2008
Not all collectible coins are valuable because of their grade or rarity. Sometimes a coin in any condition is desirable because of its association with someone famous. An excellent example of this is the coin shown in the photo here. As you can see, it is severely damaged so it normally wouldn't be worth anything. However, the coin's owner thinks that Wild West sharpshooting legend Annie Oakley shot this coin! It would be amazing if it were true, but can such a thing be proven?Photo by Stacey Young for History Detectives

That’s pretty humorous. Who knows unless you can trace it with certainty.
Reminds me of someone in our family tree that had a big story about how one of our ancestors ran into Jesse James. Turns out they didn’t even live in the same era.
Hi BB, thanks for stopping by! Actually, in the case of this coin, they did find a way to prove it, which is why the case is so interesting! It’s being featured on the PBS show History Detectives Monday night (as the article this post links to points out.) It’s a fascinating example of what I call “forensic numismatics!”

I don’t know Susan. This program might be a stretch of the facts. Hope I get a chance to see it and see the evidence. But I might wonder about the veracity of the uncles.
Again lore is great but to paraphrase great historians; “no one will ever know but it is still a valuable exercise to investigate.”
This is very interesting.
