2008 U.S. Proof Sets Go On Sale

The 14-coin 2008 Proof Set has gone on sale at the U.S. Mint. The cost of the set this year is $26.95, which is the same price as the 2007 set. The 14 coins come in 3 separate plastic cases, which the Mint calls "lenses." One lens has the 5 State Quarters issued this year. A second lens contains the 4 Presidential Dollars for 2008, and a third lens has the Cent, Nickel, Dime, Half Dollar, and Sacagawea Dollar. Although the State Quarter lens and Presidential Dollar lens can be purchased individually, the only way to get the coins in the third lens is to buy this set.

Proof Sets make outstanding gifts, especially for graduations, birthdays, and other celebrations where the date is something that will be remembered. U.S. Mint Proof Sets can also be lucrative coins to "put away" for a few decades. Most of them rise in value over time, some quite significantly! For example, the 1999 Silver Proof Set, which had an issue price of $31.95, is worth $400 according to the current Red Book.

This is more of a rant…. Thanks US Mint, for making the 2008 annual proof boxes too thick (3-lens) to fit in the last slot of the 10-slot collectors box that I have my 1999-2007 (2-lens) annual sets in. Thank you sooooo much! Whoever decided that was a genius… NOT!

Yeah, what’s up with that? What genius came up with this idea? For 2007 you got the 2-lens blue 2007 box that held the 5 quarter lens and the regular coin lens together. This was then placed with the presidential coins in a 3-lens width white box. Why couldn’t they just do that for 2008?

I called the MINT twice, and both times got the same response. Nothing we can do ! That is BS. There IS something you can do. Do what you did LAST YEAR ! My guess it is a ploy to get us all to buy more boxes.. but that is so like the government. I am asking all my friends to call now.. and see if we can get them to give in. Doubt it will happen, but worth a shot. Free call.
