PNG to Host Free Collectors Seminars

Tuesday February 26, 2008
There's an old saying that claims there's no such thing as a free lunch. Well, the Professional Numismatists Guild (PNG) is about to prove that old saying wrong, because a free lunch is exactly what you'll get when you attend their upcoming free "Share the Knowledge" seminars. The "Share the Knowledge" series is a year-long program of numismatic seminars being given by the PNG in an effort to promote interest in the hobby and educate dealers and collectors. The PNG is making some of the leading experts in various numismatic fields available during these free one-hour talks.

The next free PNG seminar will be at the Whitman Baltimore Coin and Currency Show this Friday, Feb. 29, at Noon. The seminar entitled, "Collecting Coins, Medals and Tokens From the Back of the Red Book," will be given by PNG Board Member Robert Rhue of Denver, Colorado. The talk will focus on all of the wonderful numismatic items besides coins which are listed in the Red Book, and which are hot collectibles in their own right. If you want to consider yourself to be a well-rounded, knowledgeable collector, then you should at least know a little about these types of items, and Robert's seminar will be a great place to learn the basics.

The PNG will offer another free lunch (and seminar) at the American Numismatic Association's (ANA) National Money Show in Phoenix, Arizona. On Saturday, March 8, at Noon, Tom Denly, an internationally respected banknote expert (and PNG Board Member) will present, "The History of U.S. Paper Money and How to Collect It." I'll definitely be attending this seminar if I can make it to Phoenix for the Money Show, because I don't know much about banknotes at all and I'm rather curious about how (and why) people collect them! ;)

Regular readers know that I am a big proponent of the PNG because they have very strict ethical standards that their member coin dealers must follow. In addition, when you buy from PNG dealers you have recourse against them for bad transactions, since they can be sanctioned or kicked out of the PNG for misrepresenting coins, selling fakes, ripping people off, etc. Just to join the PNG, dealers are required to demonstrate financial stability, experience in the numismatic field, and be vetted by their peers. Therefore, I don't think it's a stretch to say that PNG dealers are some of the most qualified experts in the industry, so when these guys do educational seminars, I'm often right near the front of the line to pony up my attendance fee. When the seminars are free, you just can't possibly go wrong! Especially when they come with a free lunch!
