2008 Presidential Dollar Proof Set Sales Begin

Tuesday January 29, 2008
Update: The U.S. Mint Web site began accepting orders for the Presidential Dollar Proof Sets by Wednesday evening (Jan. 30.)

The 2008 Presidential Dollar Proof Sets have gone on sale as of today (Tues., Jan. 29, 2008) but you won't find them for sale anywhere on the U.S. Mint Web site yet! In what seems to be an aftereffect of the Mint's Ecommerce outage of last week, the Mint's new Ecommerce partner is still struggling to get everything working 100% again. As I reported previously, the Mint was unable to come to terms on a contract renewal with their previous Ecommerce partner, which resulted in a sudden Ecommerce outage for the Mint (although the rest of Web site continued to function normally.) As Mint officials have stated repeatedly, their number one concern is for transaction security and reliability (meaning that they want to make real sure your credit card number isn't at risk when you place your order, and that you get shipped the same coins you place an order for.) It seems the new partner will need some time to code in all of the Mint's many and continuous new product offerings before full service is finally and totally restored. In the meantime, you can order the 2008 Presidential Dollar Proof Sets by calling the Mint's toll-free number of 800-872-6468.

The circulating Presidential Dollars for 2008, along with their release dates, are:
  • James Monroe - February 14
  • John Quincy Adams - May 15
  • Andrew Jackson - August 14
  • Martin Van Buren - November 13
The Presidential Dollar Proof Set is a nice way to get your hands on all of the coins early, although if you don't mind waiting, you can get a better deal late in the year by buying the entire year 2008 Proof Set which includes Proof versions of all circulating coins. For my part, I like to get a couple of sets early - one set to open up and photograph the coins for use on my Web site throughout the year, and the other set to "put away" for the future. By the end of the year last year, between all of the Mint's various offerings and "product options," I had 7 copies of each Presidential Dollar Proof coin! Nonetheless, I've already ordered 2 of the 2008 Presidential Dollar Proof Sets via the 800 telephone number.

Do you prefer to order each of the Proof Sets as soon as they come out, or do you wait until the more economical "entire set" offerings at the end of the year? Are you going to call and order now, or wait until the Mint's Web site is fully functional (with all products available) again? Share your answers via the "comments" link below.

I suppose it depends on how you plan your individual collections. Personally I have 2 of everything the mint produces for the Presidents Series creating a large “Block” of coins. I’m thinking that maybe down the road having 2 complete sets, like this, may be worth a lot of money, who knows? I also collect the regular minted coins in the same fashion & currently have pretty much everything the mint has produced (for circulation) from 1999 to present in Silver Proof, Proof & uncirculated condition.

Coin collecting can be an investment venture, hence until a certain amount of time goes by, you don’t really know what will be of a high return. I think collecting in this fashion, described above, helps cover some of those bases. I also collect some of the other stuff as well (i.e. AE’s, Baldies, etc).

Also by acquiring certain sets individually (westward nickels, pres.) it keeps the regular sets in tact, so if a particular coin(s) does escalate I don’t have to pirate anything which could possibly hinder their value as a set.

Just a thought…

I think it’s a crap shoot. Not puting all your eggs in one basket and spreading the risk is better than trying to forcast a certain coins future.
Any of us that got the first Prez dollars already have some value built in. Mine came by dumb luck. I never for-saw the motto change coming. I’m not forcasting value, in my own opinion, i think moving the motto has already added value, we haven’t seen it.
Basicly i think i can see somthing i like and buy it for that reason. 9 Times out of 10, that’s what attracts alot of people to the same things. They like it first. Then people collect it.
So the laws of attraction may be at work helping to move up prices. Prognosticating dosen’t work in most cases.
I budget my self. Pockets aren’t deep. I’m not into buying to complete a collection. My purchases have been hodge podge. Except for the Presedents dollars. Everything goes away for the future.

I want to get some of the earliest of these coins in the event that some previously undiscovered variation might be captured early.
These sets are not major investments (less than $15) so I’ve already ordered 5 sets–probably will distribut to grand children in the future.

I ordered 3 Pres. Dollar PR. Sets today. I think , with the mottos placement change that “Uncle Marc” will be remembered in a sweeter light 30 years from now. Rollin’ the dice here but seems like a sure thing with the Pesidential Dollars !

Does any one have an idea when the motto change will take place?
Every bodys ideas are good here. They gave me some ideas i may use on future purchases.
I’m wondering if the change will come mid year. Or in the same run of any of the new series.
That would make things interesting!

I believe Susan posted something a few months back about it being mid 2008 or 2009. Either way I decided to purchase just about everything the Mint makes regarding the Pres series thinking they may be worth more in the long run since they’ll be different than the rest of the series. Like ya said earlier “It’s a crap shoot”.

The 2008 proof sets only come in a 3 lens box. These will NOT fit in the nice storage box the US MINT sold me in 1999 that promised me I could store ALL 10 years of my proof sets !! They must have figured out they could make MORE money by offering a 3 lens box !! The problem is, in 2007, when the pres dollars started, they were DUMB enough to package the 10 coin proof set separate from the 4 pres dollar lens.. and I could put the quarter proof set in my storage box, in slot #9.. and keep the dollars separate, in a nice box of its own. But.. in 2008 they smartened up and decided NOT to keep the separate so we would HAVE to buy a 3 lens box. Crooks. Figures the government would come up with such an idea. I plan to call, and invite my friends and fellow collectors to call the MINT to complain, and ask for a separate box for the 10 coin set and the 4 pres dollars. It is only fair !! We spent 9 years collecting these quarters.. throw us a bone !!

Unbelievable … now what are we suppose to do with a 3 lens box that won’t fit in a 2 lens collectors case. I too have 9 boxes(9 years collecting) of the 2 lens proof sets in my collectors box! Sheesh … they at least better give out the proper sleeves to “fix” this obvious oversight!

I CALLED THE MINT TODAY WITH THE SAME PROBLEM. I THINK THEY SHOULD REDO THE RED BOXES AND SEND THEM TO ALL OF US WHO BOUGHT THEM FOR FREE. EVERYONE NEEDS TO COMPLAIN ABOUT THIS. THEY GAVE ME AN ADRESS TO WRITE TO THE US MINT.US MINT 801 9TH ST NW
WASHINGTON DC 20220. COMPLAIN.

Responding to Corky, Crucis, and CPARKER:
I wrote to the Mint to complain about the three-lens box. I received a very dissappointing reply from Jim Mullahy, Assistant Director, Brand Management. He says, in part, that in 2007, for “technical reasons” that the two lenses of the 2007 US Mint Proof Set was packaged in a single carton and the third lens, which contained the first four $1 Conins, was in its own carton. But in 2008 the three lenses were in a single carton. He goes on to say “While this packaging reflects the consistency of a single carton that we have strived to achieve in the past, we realize that collectors who purchased the two-lens Collector’s box are unable to store the 2008 proof set. In an effort to meet collector’ individual needs, Collector’s Boxes are available in various configurations.” Finally, he says that if I am dissatisfied with a previous purchase, please visit the web site for their return policy.

I just want them to 1) admit they screwed up and 2) send me a two lens carton to match my previous 9 years’ worth of mint sets. Why in the world couldn’t they simply do exactly the same thing they did in 2007 rather than making my collector’s box unusable?

I am very curious how many complaints they have gotten and if there is any way to force this issue? I bought two sets over a decade, so I have a lot of money invested in this collection. Any ideas?

To every one that has a cpmplaint with the mint about products they’ve purchased, but are no longer usefull. There are 2 choices, return the item. Write your congressman. That’s the only recourse i can see, unless someone knows a better way???

What a mess! I too called the Mint and was told there are NO plans to offer a countermeasure (discount on new box or sleeve) so I guess I’ll have to wait for a third party solution. I am going to return the storage box and let them decide what to do with it. This is such poor planning … where is there standardized work and consistency?

(15) Ted says:

I also called the mint about the box being too thick. They gave me an address to write to and I didn’t even get a reply. I’m sure some company will come up with a solution for this problem.

(16) Tom Jamison says:

I’ve written a letter to the mint and initially got a reply saying they were going to fix the problem. Later I got a letter saying they were not going to fix the problem. I’ve written to both Tennessee Senators and have gotten a phone call from the office of one saying they would contact the mint and get back to me. The phone call was about one week ago. I recommend everyone contact their congressmen and/or senators (in writing). If I do not get a satisfactory answer from my senator, I will probably try the news media.

IF YOU PULL THE BOTTOM LINER OUT OF THE RED STORAGE BOX YOU CAN FIT THE WHOLE 10 YEARS IN THE BOX.
