How to Make Your Own Coins on Demand

Sunday October 14, 2007
Australian Coin Made From the Do it Yourself Coin Press (Obv.) - 50 Years of Australian Television The Australian Royal Mint at Canberra has a really cool machine that lets you make your own coins on demand! It's a huge coin-press, that makes 25mm $1 legal tender coins, while you watch. Along with the special commemorative coin, you get a lovely little tri-fold brochure to store it in, plus the coin bears a mint mark that can only be found on these "made on demand" coins.

The commemorative coin type changes from time to time; the example on the right shows the "50th Anniversary of Australian Television", designed by Vladimir Gottvald. The coins cost $2.50 to make, but all things considered, I think they're a great collectible. Not only are they very limited production pieces, (someone has to visit the Mint and have the coin made on demand), they're very inexpensive compared to most other special Mint offerings. I think this is a good idea, and there are several companies in the US that will do the same thing.
