Wyoming State Quarter is Released

Saturday September 8, 2007
Wyoming State QuarterThe Wyoming State Quarter was quietly made available for sale on the U.S. Mint's Web site, and at local banks, as of September 4, 2007. There will be an official release ceremony at 10:00 am MT on Friday, September 14, 2007 at the Cheyenne Civic Center, in Cheyenne, Wyoming. U.S. Mint Director Ed Moy and Wyoming Governor Dave Freudenthal will officiate, as the State of Wyoming celebrates the launch of the 44th Quarter in the Statehood Quarters Program, which is the 4th State Quarter to be released in 2007.

The Wyoming State Quarter is, unfortunately, one of the more uninteresting of the State Quarter designs. It features the silhouette of a so-called "bucking bronco," although in official terms the design is described as a "bucking horse and rider." While the design itself is strongly reminiscent of Wyoming's "Wild West" heritage, apparently someone forgot to include some detail in the design so that we end up with a blank horse and rider on a blank background. At least there's a little bit of definition in the Proof version, in which the bucking bronco is frosted.

Now for a trivia question! The Wyoming State Motto, which appears on the Wyoming State Quarter, is The Equality State. Do you know why Wyoming is called the "Equality State?"

Why is Wyoming Called the "Equality State?"
  • (a) Wyoming was a Civil Rights leader.
  • (b) Wyoming was a Voting Rights leader.
  • (c) Wyoming was first to pass the Equal Rights Amendment.
  • (d) None of the above.
Keep your answer in mind; the correct choice appears at the end of this post.

U.S. Mint to Host Wyoming Coin Collectors' Forum

In advance of the festivities to celebrate the launch of the Wyoming Quarter, U.S. Mint Director Ed Moy will host a free Coin Collectors' Forum on Thursday, Sept. 13, at 6:00 pm MT. The Forum will be held at the Cheyenne Depot, 121 W. 15th St. in Cheyenne. If you have never been to one of these great U.S. Mint Collectors' Forums, they're well worth going to! The purpose of these Forums is for the U.S. Mint to answer questions from the public about its programs and coins, plus to collect feedback from the public about what it would like to see the Mint do. If you'd like to get Ed Moy's firsthand views about the placement of In God We Trust on the nation's Legal Tender, this is the place! I went to the U.S. Mint Coin Collectors' Forum at the 2007 ANA convention in Milwaukee this past August and found it to be utterly fascinating.

Trivia Question Answer: (b) - Wyoming is called the "Equality State" because it was a leader in the fight for Women's Voting Rights.

Although coin collectors (which I am, in a not so “professional level”) like the possiblity of “errors” which are much more possible through much more detail, I personally like the simplicity of this coin. For once,
Amen to simplicity!

(2) Fred says:

I was disappointed by the total lack of detail on this coin. It reminded me of a Chuck-e- cheese token

(3) Scott! says:

When I first saw the coin, I thought it was struck in error and worth more than just the obvious 25 cents. Guess not! Sad looking coin compared to the rest. Not even really worth the quarter!

(4) Tom Butler says:

Wow! I thought I discovered an error! The bucking bronco lacking detail? How about the Dealware horse and rider lacking detail? Dreadful concept but a great error coin find! The best recent issue is Nevada’s mustangs leaping right at you !

(5) Bill says:

I cannot find this quarter and I live in SoCal. I have every other one. My hardest to find was Pennsylvania. I like the simple design. Some of the others look like they were done by committee, and everyone got what they wanted in, making many very cluttered.

(6) Donna says:

To Bill from SCal: I live in Pennsylvania and can give you the Pennsylvania quarter if you can give me a Wyoming quarter. I haven’t seen one yet and it’s Dec. 2008.

(11) Karen says:

I have one of these quarters. The one that I have looks like one side is upside down. Does anyone know if this is an error or if they were all printed this way? Thanks for any info provided.

(12) Steve says:

The “artwork” for the Wyoming quarter is just exactly the same look as their license plate has been as long as I can remember and I’m 51 with a darn good memory!
