First Spouse Gold Coins - U.S. Mint Change of Plans
Friday May 11, 2007
The upcoming First Spouse half-ounce gold bullion coins just became a little more accessible to the average collector. The U.S. Mint has scrapped its plans to offer the 2007 First Spouse coins only as a set of all four (with a price tag of at least $1,600 per set.) Instead, the First Spouse coins will be sold separately, for $410.95 each for standard business strikes, and $429.95 for the Proof versions. The first two coins in this .9999 fine gold bullion series (Martha Washington and Abigail Adams) go on sale at 12 noon (ET) on Tuesday, June 19. Mintage is limited to 40,000 coins per First Spouse, with the business strike and proof coin totals being combined to achieve this maximum. The First Spouse gold coins are the companion pieces to the new Presidential Dollar series, which got off to a rollicking start Feb. 15th when the U.S. Mint accidentally released large numbers of George Washington plain edge dollars and other dollar coin errors. Like the Presidential Dollar series, the First Spouse coins will be issued at the rate of four per year until all of the eligible Spouses have been honored. The U.S. Mint will also sell a slightly modified version of the First Spouse coins in the form of a bronze medal.
It will be interesting to see which of the First Spouse coins are most popular, (and which become the most valuable) over time. Although certain Spouses may sell out due to the fact that they are well known, some of the lesser known Spouses might end up with small mintages when it's all said and done. This is definitely a series to keep your eye on if you like to speculate in collectible gold.

I like the idea of collecting the presidential dollar coins, but find them impractical(cumbersome & heavy) to carry as will my husband when he unloads his pockets at the airport.
First spouse??? 43 presidents have all had 1st ladies. We really have taken politically correct to another laughable level.
