Picture holding a coin in your hand and imagining the people who might have used it, what they bought, etc...Now imagine that the coin you're holding circulated in ancient Rome! The year is 312 AD. The coin bears an image of Constantine the Great, who has just seen the vision that changes the course of Western civilization forever. Christians are finally escaping constant persecution. Who used this coin you're holding? What did they wear? What kind of work did they do?
These are some of the questions that teachers in the Ancient Coins for Education (ACE) program encourage their students to ask. ACE has been providing ancient coins, lesson plans and other related materials to teachers since 2001. They have recently launched a new web site, which makes it easier than ever for teachers and students to learn more about the fascinating hobby of collecting ancient coins.
